Youth Waves continue to be a main festival feature attracting youth groups from as far as California, U.S.A. Expressions by Toronto's young talents are captured as thousands gather to witness the performances of favourite local youth performers highlighted by famous Hollywood youth celebrities.

 

Cultural Dance Waves
(KUMAWAY! SUMAYAW!)

This year's festival will present the best of Philippine dances to be performed for the very
first time at the Yonge-Dundas Square. Featured dance groups include Culture Philippines Ontario and the Kayumanggi Dancers. Folk dancers in Philippine native costumes of exquisite colours will regal the audience with their dance exhibition of the famous "Tinikling" or bamboo dance.

Market Place
(Pamilihang Bayan)

Ethnic booths with crafts, artworks, heritage displays, indigenous traditions and other reflections of Philippine culture will be showcased in the International Marketplace area. The aroma of delectable native dishes is sure to entice everyone to feast all weekend long. There will be activity areas catering to people of all ages from children, youth, families and seniors through interactive games, demonstrations and contests.

"Kawayan" Parade on Yonge

The "Longest Street in the World" will be the site of the first Philippine Parade on Yonge Street as Filipinos WAVE their flags and cultural dancers and revelers sway to the drumbeats of the Ati-Atihan drummers and soot-covered festival 'warriors'. Curious onlookers and festival patrons alike will converge along Yonge Street from Gerrard moving towards the much talked-about Filipinos Making Waves Festival at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Festival Gala Night
(Pangunang Handog)

The opening ceremonies of the 3rd Filipinos Making Waves Festival will be another red-carpet gathering of famous successful Filipinos who have made waves or are currently making waves in the Canadian mainstream community. Selected VIP guests and invited dignitaries will once again parade in their exquisite Filipino costumes and evening wear. This year's high profile event will be held at one of Toronto’s most glamorous settings.


Kids Zone
(Paraiso ng mga Bata)

A children’s area will be buzzing with kids’ activities while learning a thing or two about the culture. Native games (sunka, sipa, etc.) and arts and crafts will thrill the children while parents partake in “showing-off” the skills to their kids.

 

Waves Of Toronto
(Mga Sikat sa Toronto)

The local Filipino Talents Making Waves is back by popular demand! Mentor Productions artists and selected new local talents from various Filipino communities in the GTA will present original production numbers and electrifying performances at the Concert Stage. Famous celebrity performers from the U.S. and Philippine showbiz will entertain and bring you back to those nostalgic days of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

The festival will showcase an unprecedented cultural events, music and related activities to illustrate the diversity of contemporary traditional Filipino arts and culture.

Outdoor Showcase
(Mga Bonggang Palabas)

The main Concert Stage will feature visiting and local performance artists to thrill festival revelers to the end. They represent Filipino working artists, cultural groups and acclaimed performers from Canada, the Philippines and the United States. An array of renowned performing artists will grace the center stage as they regal Toronto audience with their captivating performances.

Filipinos Making Waves Festival takes a bow as a two—day cultural extravaganza on August 15-16, 2009 at the heart of Toronto, the YDS (Yonge-Dundas Square). As part of its Heritage Day Celebrations, YDS is pleased to present the festival to its mainstream audience in cooperation with Focus Philippines. It will showcase outdoor performances and ethnic booths.
